Mulholland Appeals to Council to Save the Historic Royal Park School Building

9.01.00am GMT Sat 6th Mar 2010

Yesterday Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West sent a letter to Leeds Council executive board members regarding the future of the former Royal Park School in Hyde Park. A decision about the future of the historic building is planned to take place on Wednesday 10th March.

Greg urged the board members to postpone the decision about the future of the building as currently the Royal Park Community Consortium are putting together a business plan which explores the possibility of the building becoming a community centre.

Commenting Mulholland said:

"Due to the particular needs of the community in Hyde Park there needs to be further discussion between Council Officers and community representatives, before the future of this landmark community building is decided.

"There has been real commitment on this issue from so many local people; it is only fair that Council Officers should look properly over the consortium's proposal so that the correct decision is made.

"Royal Park School was and is a community building, owned by the people of Leeds and operated by Education Leeds and Leeds City Council on their behalf. This must be remembered throughout this decision making process."
