Mulholland: Expenses review shows it is time for MP accommodation

Leading parliamentary expense reformer Greg Mulholland has today said that the mess regarding the second home allowance in light of the Legg review means it is time to provide MPs with accommodation instead of claiming for rent or mortgage.

The review has further revealed confusing arrangements for mortgage claims with many MPs asked to be some of the claims back. This is on top of the scandal of some MPs deliberating 'flipping' or misrepresenting their main and second home to personally benefit.

Greg Mulholland, who believes that the practice of allowing MPs to buy property with taxpayers' money should cease, commented:

"Enough is enough, It is time for a new system where no MP can make money from secondary accommodation needed to do their job.

"The only way to restore public trust now is to provide MPs who need accommodation with a suitable, modest place to stay in. This would also actually be much better value for the taxpayer in the long term compared to the hundreds of thousands shelled out on mortgage and rent.

"It is time MPs accepted that this is the only credible solution to the mess the House of Commons has got itself in."
