'GOVERNMENT ALL TALK AND NO ACTION OVER TRANSPORT IN LEEDS' - MULHOLLAND
5.03.06pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 19th Aug 2009
Greg Mulholland MP for Leeds North West has been leading efforts in Parliament to improve public transport in Leeds.
Greg has today written to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Mole MP, following revelations that the Department for Transport does not intend to introduce extra rail carriages to the northern rail network to meet passenger demand.
Greg said:
"The Government is hiding behind the excuse that because the line is due to electrified they can not commit to introducing extra passenger carriages.
The trains coming in and out of Leeds are overcrowded, passengers can not wait for the entire network to be electrified, we need extra carriages now!
This looks like a very weak excuse for the Government to avoid making a commitment to extra passenger carriages, they have not even provided a schedule by which we can expect the electrification process to be complete."
