SAT NAV DANGERS MUST BE TACKLED - MULHOLLAND

A list of some of the most dangerous routes used by Heavy Goods Vehicles being directed by satellite navigation devices across the country was released this week by the Liberal Democrats. The devices frequently direct large vehicles down narrow roads where they can become stuck or hit low bridges.

Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, is calling on the Government to take action to ensure the devices take account of the width and height of large vehicles before choosing a route.

Commenting, Greg said:

"The Government said two years ago it would look at this but so far they have failed to act

"HGVs are using inappropriate routes such as Old Pool Bank in Wharfdale which is far too narrow. The HGVs not only can block the road but make it is unsafe for legitimate road users and pedestrians.

"The rise in the use of Sat Nav devices has led to a doubling in the number of large vehicles hitting rail bridges. Action is needed now before there are more accidents

"It is about time that legislation was introduced forcing the makers of satellite navigation systems to take into account the size of the vehicle and the suitability of the route."
