"LEEDS BRADFORD AIRPORT PLANS CLEARLY SHOW NEED FOR NEW AIRPORT RAIL LINK" - MULHOLLAND

Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, has called for a new rail link connecting Leeds Bradford airport and the centre of Leeds, following expansion plans for the airport which aim to substantially increase levels of passenger traffic.

The expansion plans will place an increasing burden on a transport network, particularly on the roads, that is already struggling to cope with the volume of traffic already present.

In response Greg has called for a new rail link connecting the airport to the city centre, possibly as part of the train-tram scheme being developed on the Harrogate line.

Commenting Greg said:

"The airport expansion, whilst it may bring new jobs and other economic benefits to the area, clearly demonstrates the need for a new transport solution to cope with these changes.

"Our trains are already packed and our roads already congested, substantially increasing the size of Leeds Bradford will only add to these problems, creating even more gridlock and congestion.

"What we need is a new solution which will actually address these problems. A new rail link between the airport and the city should be explored, particularly given the train-tram developments being considered on the Harrogate line, which would provide an economical and environmentally sound solution which has the potential to make a significant difference to the region."
