DELIGHTED THAT UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS WILL BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF ALZHEIMER'S RESEARCH - MULHOLLAND

Leeds MP and Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Older People Greg Mulholland has written to the University of Leeds to commend the fact that they have been awarded nearly £200,000 for new research into Alzheimer's disease.
This prestigious grant will allow local researchers to begin a project later this year which will examine how the build up of the toxic protein, amyloid, that occurs in the brains of Alzheimer's patients, can be stopped.
Commenting Greg said:
"Dementia affects hundreds of thousands of people in the UK, yet it is still fundamentally misunderstood and receives scant attention, despite the devastating impact that it can have on the lives of those who suffer from it.
"While great advances in our understanding of Alzheimer's disease and the new approaches to treatment and prevention are being made here in the UK, it is still nowhere near enough. We are at real risk of failing sufferers of Alzheimer's, particularly vulnerable older people, and leaving them marginalised and ignored.
"That is why I am particularly pleased that the University of Leeds has won this prestigious grant, which will allow talented local researchers to be a the forefront of research which has the potential to affect so many lives for the better."
