RESPONSE BY TESCO ON CUT-PRICE BOOZE ENCOURAGING - MULHOLLAND

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 21st Feb 2008

Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West and Member of All Party Parliamentary Beer Group and CAMRA, has welcomed news that giant supermarket chain Tesco has said that it is prepared to work with the Government on limits on the sale of cheap alcohol.

This week Mr Mulholland has tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament calling for a return to classic British 'pub culture' where people are encouraged to enjoy alcohol responsibly.

Commenting Mr Mulholland said:

"It is very welcome to hear that the country's biggest supermarket chain is willing to support action on this issue.

"It shows that the sale of cut-price alcohol at rock bottom prices has become a real concern, fuelling binge-drinking and raising serious health fears.

"But the sale of cut-price booze is only part of the problem - we need a return to traditional British community pub culture, where drinkers are encouraged to enjoy alcohol responsibly."
