Leeds MP Adds Support to Parliamentary Motion Calling for Restoration of Democracy in Pakistan

12.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 7th Oct 2007

Leeds MP, Greg Mulholland, has added his name to a motion in the House of Commons calling upon President Musharraf to lift the state of emergency in Pakistan and restore democracy in the country.

Commenting Greg said:

"The state of emergency must be lifted and democracy restored in Pakistan as soon as possible.

"President Musharraf must recognise that the only way to tackle extremism and terrorism is through democracy and political participation, and these measures take Pakistan backwards, not forewords.

"Free and fair elections must be held in January as planned and the constitution of Pakistan restored without delay."
