Lib Dems take tough action on Fly-Tipping in Leeds

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 22nd Sep 2004

Councillor Ryk Downes, Lead Member for Enforcement, said; "Fly-tipping is illegal and a blight on our environment. To combat this increasing problem we have stepped up our enforcement actions and are now using CCTV, surveillance cameras and road blocks to help catch the perpetrators."

"The majority of the incidents of fly-tipping reported in Leeds are only minor however we are aware that a significant amount of fly-tipping is carried out by unscrupulous traders who are trying to avoid the cost of paying for legitimate disposal of waste. A number of hot-spots around the city have been identified, evidence has been taken and prosecutions prepared, the majority of these have been cleared and successfully closed down."

"Between April and June this year we have successfully caught and brought before the courts 23 fly-tipping cases, several of which relate to commercial waste."

"We have also increased our enforcement activities against people who benefit from illegally disposing of commercial waste. In the past month we have seized two lorry-loads of waste and prosecutions are being pursued."
