12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 16th Dec 2004

Local Lib Dem Councillors last night welcomed Lady Mayoress Margaret Townsley to the official launch of the Headingley Lights Project. Held at the Citrus Bar in Headingley, the event was well attended by representatives from the projects many supporters, including local ward Councillors Greg Mulholland and Martin Hamilton.

Councillor Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Headingley) said: "We were very pleased to welcome the Lady Mayoress to the official launch of the Headingley Lights Project. The project itself is unique as it is funded by the generosity of local businesses and organisations. Without this sense of community vision the project would not have been able to get off the ground. This is our chance to say thank you to all the people who made the project possible."

Councillor Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) added: "The Headingley Lights Project has caught the imagination of the local community from the start and has helped to create a real sense of community pride. The reaction and support from those who live and work in Headingley has been nothing short of sensational. This year's project is bigger and better than ever."

The following businesses and organisations made donations towards the cost of the Christmas Lights:

  • Leeds Tykes & Rhinos

  • Leeds Metropolitan University
