MULHOLLAND TEAMS UP WITH 'GREEN QUEEN' TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 10th Oct 2006

Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, teamed up with a 'Green Queen' outside the House of Commons today to highlight the need for a climate change law to be included in the Queen's speech at the opening of Parliament in November.

Today's event was part of a wider campaign being run by Friends of the Earth, called The Big Ask, that has been supported by a large number of MP. It calls for an introduction of a law that would commit the Government to cutting the UK's carbon dioxide emissions by at least three per cent year on year.

Commenting, Greg Mulholland said:

"This is a fantastic campaign, and I hope that the Government will sit up and take notice.

"Provision to cut carbon dioxide emissions should be in the Queen's speech to prove that the Government recognises the seriousness of this problem and are willing to take action - Climate change cannot and must not be ignored.

"Legislation which commits the UK to steadily reducing its carbon emissions will ensure we make the cuts needed and that we make these cuts in a manageable way."
